Sagittarius is a very old constellation, and it has been written about in Roman and Greek mythology. Each civilization has its own interpretation of the Sagittarius. The Sagittarius represents the centaur which is half a man and half beast and has a bow and arrow in hand. The first people to notice this constellation were perhaps the Sumerians, and they saw it as Nergal, which means the Archer, God of War. |
The Sagittarius has a fearsome look and that is why people born under this sign are quite fearless. The Sagittarius in the night sky is looking at the Scorpius, the Scorpion King and aiming his arrow at his heart. The bow of the Sagittarius has four stars in the shape of a 'Y'. The stars are lambda, delta, epsilon and Sagittarii. They are the entire Greek alphabet also.
The heart of the Milky Way actually lies in the constellation of Sagittarius. It has very rich constellations of bright stars and planetary nebulae. The Sagittarius is visible in the northern hemisphere in the months of June, July, August and September. One can see it clearly without the city lights and the best way to identify it in the night sky is to look half way up in the sky on the northern side and spot the four stars that form the Y which is the tip of the arrow. The arrow is being pointed at the heart of the Scorpius which is the Scorpion. Sagittarius is also one of the biggest constellations which represent half man, half beast and the bow and the arrow.
