The sign of Libra is the scales or the common balance. The people born under this sign are also right in their judgment accordingly Libra means the common balance and this sign was born some 4,000 years ago. The sun passed through this constellation some time around this period. |
According to a legend the stars, Libra was symbolic of the golden chariot of Pluto. Libra has a prominence in the story of Pluto abducting Persephone which is a famous Greek myth. Pluto used his golden chariot whenever he wanted to visit the upper world. He was known as the god of the Underworld. He came to the upper world to seduce a nymph. Persephone was the daughter of Demeter and Zeus. Hades who was also in love with their daughter abducts her.
Zeus and his wife become distraught for their daughter and they send out several warriors in search of her. Even Hades and Hercules are sent in search for her. Demeter is so depressed with the loss of her daughter that she forbids any seeds from sprouting. The upper world is severely in draught, and Zeus is also tired of it. Zeus convinces Hades to give up Persephone and Hades agrees on the condition that if she has not eaten anything then he will agree. Though she did not eat anything she had 6 pomegranate seeds. So Hades claimed she cannot return. However, Zeus did manage a deal where she spends four months in the Underworld and the remaining time in the upper world. So when Persephone is allowed to visit Earth, she brings the spring season with her.
That is the story of the constellation of Libra. Rest of the time she remains as the constellation.
