Richard Gallagher, an emergency psychiatrist, recently put up an article, which was published in the New Oxford Review that was titled as “Among the Many Counterfeits: A Case of Demonic Possession”. He describes the case of demonic possession showed by a young lady with a long history of being involved with groups that were explicitly satanic. The patient who was assessed in this case report had multiple signs that were similar to demonic possession.

In trance states the patient showed the following signs:

• Vocalizations, which were in different voices from that of the patient, hurling derogatory, blasphemous and in insulting tone.
• Using language that was unusual and inappropriate, which the patient did not know before.
• Psychic knowledge about certain places, actions and events that is beyond the possible realm of the patient’s interest or understanding
• Not remembering anything from the trance states
• Drastic change in body temperature
• Objects moving in bookshelves without any visible force applied
• Extraordinary strength while exorcism was on
• Strong reaction against the holy water
• Levitation.

Gallagher says that he has seen patients having psychosis of different sorts and degrees, which includes people who are known to be hyper-religious or can hear voices from god, angels, demons, Satan or different supernatural entities. He experiences the extreme consequences and effects of psychiatry almost everyday. Being a qualified professional and his involvement with the patient in understanding her problem led him to the conclusion that the lady was in fact possessed.
